Video - Giant Wahoo caught by George Poveromo

George heads back to the beautiful Bahamas Island of San Salvador, where during his last and only visit prior to this trip he scored his personal best wahoo to date – a 143-pound, three-ounce monster!  This time he’s back in late April and targeting yellowfin tuna and dolphin aboard Over Under's “Low Profile”.  The local waters come alive with tuna and big dolphin during the spring, and George and Trey find plenty of cooperative fish.  Keeping the fish biting requires the team to troll a mix of natural baits, pure artificials, and lure/bait combos, and frequently adjust the size of these baits, their positioning and trolling speeds;  Once hooked up, it takes muscle and speed to keep their catches from being devoured by the sharks!  The twist here, ironically, is that while trolling back to the Riding Rock Marina after a successful trip, George scores another gargantuan wahoo – a fish tipping the scale at 113-pounds, two-ounces!

Video - Diana Banks Wahoo Fishing

DIANA BANKS, BAHAMAS, WAHOO - George Poveromo teams up with Over Under Adventures president Trey Rhyne on an incredible long-range Bahamas trip to the remote Diana Bank. Poveromo and Rhyne boarded the Over Under at Sumner Point Marina on Rum Cay and travelled 70 miles south to Albert Town on Long Cay where they anchored overnight. The following morning finds them 21 miles offshore and trolling for wahoo over Dian Bank, an underwater mountain that rises to within 50 feet from a surrounding depth of 4,000 feet. Tactics covered include how to choose, rig & troll the best wahoo lures, along with how to recognize the right conditions and areas that produce a hot bite.

Bahamas Fishing Calendar

November is the beginning of the Bahamas wahoo fishing season, dolphin are still around and shots at billfish are definitely possible.  Billfish include white and blue marlin as well as sailfish. Often times, we get the most numbers of Wahoo in the later part of November.

December is getting into peak wahoo season, and as usual dolphin are always around.  This is probably the last likely chance at a marlin in the Bahamas, until spring time. The weather is typically still reasonably settled, making this a good bet for Family Trips before the winter cold fronts set in.

Wahoo, Wahoo, Wahoo!  By now the wahoo are starting to get rather large.  Shots at sailfish in the winter are not out of the question. Wahoo fishing in the Bahamas is now peaking!

Wahoo still going strong, but yellowfin and dolphin are becoming more prevalent. This is your best shot at catching a really large wahoo in the Bahamas.

The main wahoo bite comes to an end while dolphin and tuna bites, as well as shots at billfish start to dominate. Early March is still a great time to come chase after world class Wahoo.

April is traditionally the beginning of the yellowfin tuna bite. Still good chances for wahoo bites, and billfish are starting to show up more regularly. April is a great all round time to charter a boat in the Bahamas. Probably one of the best months for ACTION!

May is the most popular time for Bahamas Fishing. The Yellowfin going strong and the dolphin bite peaks. Blue and white marlin are now around in good numbers. If you are looking to go Blue Marlin fishing in the Bahamas late May is an ideal time to visit.

Blue marlin bite in full swing with multiple shots likely, yellowfin still around in good numbers, while the dolphin bite will begin to cool off. Probably one of the best times of year for all around good weather, good fishing, variety and plenty of action. A great time for a Bahamas Family Boating Vacation

Fishing between the Full and the New Moons the end of June into the middle of July should produce the best blue marlin fishing of the year.  Yellowfin are still around and dolphin should continue to be available, although not as much as in May or June. Probably the best bet for your family vacation.

Once again, as the moon rolls around, August will provide another excellent chance to target Blue Marlin in the Southern Bahamas, and the bottom fishing on the reef is excellent. Lobster season opens August, 1 every year too!

Special Note Regarding Bahamas Charter Boats: The government of the Bahamas requires that all Bahamas Charter Boats, both domestic and foreign, obtain a Bahamas Charter Boat license. A prerequisite to obtaining this license is an official inspection of the charter boat to be licensed, as well as licensing of all crew that will operate the charter boat. Over Under Adventures complies fully with all Bahamas charter boat regulations. Whether or not you decide to fish with Over Under, we urge you to inquire about the vessel's compliance with these regulations.
